The only thing patriotards remember about Tocqueville is that he said America is great because America is good. The only problem is that he never said this. Welcome to hell.  Tocqueville preceded Dabney in saying that "the negroes and the whites must either wholly part or wholly mingle," and 21st-century Christians have chosen the latter option. Tocqueville saw that "the white citizen of the United States is proud of his race and proud of himself," but this is now considered hate speech. Consequently, liberty has ebbed away, and this would not have surprised the Frenchman since racial amalgamation can only be effected via despotism.

You can see that he predicted the rise of Lincoln, but even though Tocqueville was inclined towards the abolition of slavery, he recognized and appreciated the Christian structure of Southern society. "When I contemplate the condition of the South, I can only discover two alternatives which may be adopted by the white inhabitants of those States; viz., either to emancipate the negroes, and to intermingle with them; or, remaining isolated from them, to keep them in a state of slavery as long as possible… Such is the view which the Americans of the South take of the question, and they act consistently with it. Obviously, the Christianity of that era, which sought to uphold the most lawful conditions for both races, even in an imperfect and undesirable situation, is virtually unrecognizable to neo-Christians today. So acquainted and comforted are they by despotism that they have forgotten what life was like before they were enslaved.
